GENERAL SESSION: It’s All About the People - Don't be a Soul-Sucking CEO or Leader
8:00 am - 9:15 am
Kon Tiki Ballroom
Garry Ridge, WD-40

It’s often said, with nods of wise agreement, that any organization is nothing without its
people. Countless books and courses on leadership, over many decades, address this well-known and accepted axiom.

Then why are nearly 70% of all employees in the U.S. disengaged at work? Clearly, the
conferences, books, courses, and motivational speakers are insufficient to make a
difference.

This session by WD-40 Company Chairman Emeritus Garry Ridge will be a look “under
the hood” of one of the world’s most recognized brands, where employee engagement is
above 93%, 98% say they “love to work at WD-40 Company”, and 99% say that their
“opinions and values are a good fit” for WD-40 Company. This high engagement has
resulted in a company that has doubled in revenue in the last decade and is on a
trajectory to double again in the next.

Garry will share his company’s “learning moments” over the course of his efforts to
transform the company’s culture, beginning in 1997. Lessons and principles covered
include:

• The personal journey of every servant leader, and why that philosophy is critical
• The emotional connection of a greater purpose that creates high engagement
• How to carefully and consciously choose values that will be embedded in all aspects
of leadership and employee development
• Why investing in people who invest in themselves is a secret to succession planning
and greater organizational capability
• The difference between a “team” and a “tribe”, and why WD-40 Company strove to
create a cohesive tribe that spans 17 countries where employees work
• How company performance results are directly connected to its focus on people

GENERAL SESSION: Speak Up and Lead! Presentation Skills Workshop
10:30 am - 11:30 am
Kon Tiki Ballroom
Patrick McClure, Connexia Group

We live in a hyperactive, supersonic, always-connected “instant everything” world, and I’m afraid that most of you aren’t getting your message across. There’s just too much clutter, too many messages, too many voicemails, too many texts, too many emails, too many speeches, too many books, too many articles, just TOO MANY! Whether you are speaking, presenting, or writing, your audience will make decisions FAST about whether they should give you their attention. They are constantly wondering WIFM (What's in it for me?) If you don’t give them a good answer to that question, they will activate their remote control and "click" you off!

During this energetic and motivational program, Patrick McClure will show how to
connect with an audience and command their attention in the first 30 seconds of your
presentation. He then follows with the 5 core skills you need to present your ideas with
clarity and precision. Whether presenting your ideas to an annual meeting, a board of
directors, an investment group, or your key executives, the ability to demonstrate
leadership and to persuade from the podium is a highly admired and sought after skill.
During this session, the audience will:

  • Learn how to structure and build an effective business presentation
  • Planning, Preparation and Practice
  • Using Body Motion and Vocal Variety – the Energizers
  • Handling Questions & Answers from the Podium
  • Connecting with your Audience for Maximum Impact

BREAKOUT 2: Trauma Informed Care in Aquatics
11:30 am - 12:15 pm
Rousseau East/West
Jill McHugh, Hope Floats Foundation

Childhood trauma occurs more frequently than you think and in a variety of forms. At least two-thirds of children report at least one traumatic experience annually (SAMSHA). Traumatic experiences may include nonfatal drowning experiences, neglect, death of a parent or loved one, sexual exploitation, refugee experiences, abuse, witnessing domestic violence, incarceration of a parent, a natural disaster, and so much more. Trauma-Informed Care Aquatics training for your staff prepares instructors to recognize the signs and symptoms of trauma. They’re also prepared to provide swim lessons through a trauma lens and know how to respond to the unexpected.

Past traumatic experiences can be triggered from something that we least expect. A swim instructor may look similar to someone from the child’s past that brought them a negative experience. Triggers can be subtle and random: the smell of the facility, the feeling of pool water, something someone says, etc. It’s important for staff to recognize and know how to appropriately respond when those signs and behaviors occur with students.

BREAKOUT 1: Worker Engagement : A Living Case Study of What Works and Does Not Work In Our Era of Ghosting and "Quiet Quitting
1:15 pm - 2:00 pm
Kon Tiki Ballroom
Rosemary Ghigliotty, Sana Mian, & Kelli Stryker, SwimJim, Inc.

NEW INTERACTIVE LIVING CASE STUDY FORMAT. Join us to pioneer an interactive Living Case Study in employee attraction and retention. In a unique new format, Spring Workshop attendees will hear about the issues faced by SwimJim's New York City team. Kelli Stryker and Rosemary Ghigliotty will present the issues they face, what has worked successfully and what has failed. Attendees will offer ideas, critiques and suggestions. The SwimJim New York team will put that feedback to work in the following months, with regular updates on the Assn FB group. At the National Conference in Orlando, attendees will learn how those ideas succeeded or failed at SwimJim. As our industry grows and generations change, there is no playbook for swim school employee issues : generational work ethics and expectations; urgent and new diversity-related issues; higher pay and benefits demands as well as many others without clear solutions. In New York City, all these elements come together in a very intense way, with additional dynamics like very big gaps in wealth between employees and clients. Offer your ideas, see how they worked in real life in the Big Apple in October. Prizes awarded at the National Conference for the top 3 ideas that work.

It is wonderful that they have completed their training, and are now teaching independently but how do we ensure the quality of the lessons meets our expectations, and what do we do if we notice there are some things that have slipped through the cracks? Let's review what current schools are doing, and brainstorm ways we can not only keep our lessons up to standards, but increase retention at the same time! You won't want to miss this one!
