The classroom workshop is comprised of discussions, video presentations, case studies, and interactive activities. The classroom workshop will provide participants with information on various disabilities, awareness and precautions associated with those disabilities, as well as instructional strategies and effective parent communication. Participants in the Special Abilities workshop will learn about some of the most common disabilities experienced in the aquatics industry, including Autism Spectrum Disorder. The interactive activities throughout the course will allow participants to learn from each other and gain a broader perspective on teaching individuals with special abilities. The Special Abilities Course is designed to provide a wide array of information so that participants have a solid foundation on which they can develop a special abilities program for their swim school or further develop their own individual teaching skills. A Certificate of Completion will be awarded at the end of the course.

Childhood trauma occurs more frequently than you think and in a variety of forms. At least two-thirds of children report at least one traumatic experience annually (SAMSHA). Traumatic experiences may include nonfatal drowning experiences, neglect, death of a parent or loved one, sexual exploitation, refugee experiences, abuse, witnessing domestic violence, incarceration of a parent, a natural disaster, and so much more. Trauma-Informed Care Aquatics training for your staff prepares instructors to recognize the signs and symptoms of trauma. They’re also prepared to provide swim lessons through a trauma lens and know how to respond to the unexpected.

Past traumatic experiences can be triggered from something that we least expect. A swim instructor may look similar to someone from the child’s past that brought them a negative experience. Triggers can be subtle and random: the smell of the facility, the feeling of pool water, something someone says, etc. It’s important for staff to recognize and know how to appropriately respond when those signs and behaviors occur with students.

NEW INTERACTIVE LIVING CASE STUDY FORMAT. Join us to pioneer an interactive Living Case Study in employee attraction and retention. In a unique new format, Spring Workshop attendees will hear about the issues faced by SwimJim's New York City team. Kelli Stryker and Rosemary Ghigliotty will present the issues they face, what has worked successfully and what has failed. Attendees will offer ideas, critiques and suggestions. The SwimJim New York team will put that feedback to work in the following months, with regular updates on the Assn FB group. At the National Conference in Orlando, attendees will learn how those ideas succeeded or failed at SwimJim. As our industry grows and generations change, there is no playbook for swim school employee issues : generational work ethics and expectations; urgent and new diversity-related issues; higher pay and benefits demands as well as many others without clear solutions. In New York City, all these elements come together in a very intense way, with additional dynamics like very big gaps in wealth between employees and clients.
